NCBH Hosts Forum for Diabetes Awareness Month

Third Annual Event Promotes Wellness & Education to Tackle Chronic Disease

Bronx, New York – Over 11 percent of Bronx adults suffer from diabetes, according to state records. Failure to properly manage this disease can lead to hospitalization for serious conditions such as heart disease, heart failure and stroke. In an effort to help patients manage their diabetes and to promote healthy lifestyle choices, North Central Bronx Hospital (NCBH), a member of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, hosted its third annual summit on diabetes awareness on November 14, 2013. The event coincided with “National Diabetes” Month and provided patients with resources for making positive changes in their lives.

This year’s forum was organized by Miriam Junor, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator at NCBH. The event attracted well over one hundred patients, who heard from experts in diet and nutrition, as well as former patients who are successfully managing their diabetes and improving their health. As part of the educational outreach, participants were given healthy snacks, nutrition recipes and the opportunity to join a Zumba Class.

“We run this event each year to help raise awareness about how serious diabetes really is,” explained Ms. Junor. “You can lose your sight, mind, kidneys, and eventually it can cost you your life. It’s something patients have to get under control.”

Beyond hosting the annual forum, NCBH helps patients suffering from diabetes through a variety of programs and initiatives.. Through the hospital’s diabetes registry, providers schedule patients visits for regular monitoring and identify non-adherent patients who could benefit from health education interventions. To improve diabetes management, clinical sessions are held three times a week , in which patients and medical professionals meet in a group setting to help empower patients to succeed at healthy eating, physical activity and glucose monitoring, and to help patients understand their medication.

“NCBH continues to provide excellent inpatient and outpatient care to the community we serve,” said Chief Operating Officer Sheldon P. McLeod. “Patients and their families need to know that when they come to our hospital, they are given the individualized attention they need and will learn the best practices for living a healthy lifestyle.”
