This year, St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church celebrated its 131st year of service in the Bronx.

Formed in 1882, St. Paul’s first church building was located on 150th Street and Robbins Avenue (present-day Westchester Avenue). In 1898, their second building, on East 156th Street near Union Avenue was completed. In 1959, its third and final building in the Bronx was completed at 1891 McGraw Avenue.

The structure on McGraw is the only one that remains.

On December 15, 2013, delightful music filled the church as The Bronx Concert Singers’ 32nd Annual Holiday Concert.

Music Director Robert René Galván, led the chorus and chamber orchestra through an array of traditional, international Christmas songs.

They opened with an amazing performance of G. Holst’s “Terly Terlow”.  John J. Nile’s, “I Wonder as I Wander” featured Mezzo-soprano Alexandra Fetner, whose angelic deliverance literally caused your hair to stand on end.  The program included one of my daughter’s favorite Ecuadorian lullaby’s Celi’s “A La Nanita Nana” which flooded my mind with so many fond memories of her childhood.

Founded in 1981 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, BCS is a chorus-in-residence. It was a special treat to see such amazingly talented folks get together to deliver such a fulfilling performance.

But the seasons’ celebratory events are not over.

On December 22, 2013, St. Paul’s Sunday’s School class will host its “Christmas Celebration Service” at 10am. The service will include a youth pageant, skits and chorus performances.
