Anonymous attack ads like this one attacking now Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj in 2012 will become illegal if Councilman Garodnick has his way.

A new bill sponsored by Councilman and former speaker hopeful Daniel Garodnick (D-Manhattan) attempts to ban the sort of attack ads that have barraged Bronx communities in recent City and State legislative races.
As the New York Times reports,

His bill to ban anonymous campaign ads, which he said he would introduce on Tuesday, would not necessarily put an end to them altogether: The Campaign Finance Board would still have to identify those responsible. But it could impose fines according to how widely the ads circulated.

“We’ve set the standard for independent expenditures in New York City, and communications from candidates should be no different,” Mr. Garodnick said in an interview as reported to the New York Times. “There should be no mystery about the source of political communications.”
