The New York State Power Authority has made the state $20 million last year, which is turned over to the general state fund, but the authority also doles out grants to organizations seemingly in the public service, such as the Somos El Futuro conference for legislators and state big wigs in San Juan, PR.

The Times-Union has reported on recent grant-marking by the NYPA:

“The authority provided $204,689 to 30 groups in 2011, $435,845 to 40 groups in 2012 and $153,471 to 53 groups last year.

The number of entities getting grants under the heading of “diversity” and “minority women and black enterprise” is increasing, as are the sums paid to such organizations. They include the Women’s Research and Education Fund in Westchester County, the Somos El Futuro legislative conference and the Network Journal, a magazine that held a dinner to draw attention to its list of 25 influential black women in business, a rundown that included NYPA’s chief diversity officer, Sylvia B. Hamer. The $6,300 to the magazine paid for tickets to the dinner and an ad.”
