On February 22, 2014, the 20th Annual Bronx Parks Speak Up conference will be held at the Music Building of Lehman College. The free event will run from 11am – 5pm.

Organized by the Bronx Coalition for Parks and Green Spaces (BCPGS), it is a day-long event filled with workshops, tabling and networking opportunities.

This year, a youth component has been implemented and the A.C.T.I.O.N. (Activists Coming To Inform Our Neighborhood) youth group of the Point CDC will be hosting a workshop. Fitting in with this year’s theme of “20/20”, the development of parks within the last 20 years, and a look into the next 20 years, youth will engage and lead a workshop on park advocacy, specifically around the creation of a skate park in the Hunts Point area.

Engaging local youth in this conference is essential as they are the next generation of community leaders.

I recently had a conversation with some local youth who were interested in attending as they are being afforded the opportunity of expressing their needs for a skate park. If you have a youth group who is interested in activism around park space, this will be a great place for them to learn how to advocate their needs.
