A bill sponsored by Council Members Brad Lander (D-Brooklyn), and Margaret Chin (D- Manhattan) will be introduced today that would charge New Yorkers 10 cents per grocery bag, a bill that forces the cost on the consumer unless they choose to bring reusable bags, like those pictured above.
“New Yorkers use 1 billion disposable, single-use plastic bags every year. It costs the city a lot of money, winds up in trees, clogs up storm drains, and messes up the recycling plants,” said Councilman Lander. “Cities across the country have shown that by using a very modest incentive, the vast majority of people will bring a reusable bag when shopping.”
