Second Most Powerful Republican In Congress Defeated In Primary Challenge

Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor, the whip for the Congressional Republicans, the 2nd most poweful role in Congress, was defeated on Tuesday in a primary by Tea Party Republican David Brat.  The defeat has shocked the nation as polling prior to the election suggested the nationally visible incumbent would easily win the contest. Cantor’s current term will end in December.

Originally from the Midwest, Brat moved with his wife Laura to Virginia in 1996 after obtaining aa Ph.D in economics from The American University in 1995.

After working for Arthur Andersen and as a consultant for the World Bank, he became a professor at Randolph–Macon College in 1996.[1]” His published works include “God and Advanced Mammon – Can Theological Types Handle Usury and Capitalism?” and “An Analysis of the Moral Foundations in Ayn Rand.”[6]
