The 11th Annual Hunts Point Fish Parade and Summer Festival Tomorrow

On Saturday June 21, 2014 THE POINT CDC in collaboration with The Laundromat Project, New Yorkers for Parks, Sustainable South Bronx, the Bronx River Alliance and other local organizations and individuals will be hosting The 11th Annual Hunts Point Fish Parade & Summer Festival honoring the progress of Hunts Point and “Celebrating Youth Power”. In a community largely populated by young people under the age of 18, celebrating the resiliency and energy of local youth is an important part of offering them a positive and safe summer. This years celebration provides an opportunity for the community to showcase youth talent, restore safe space passages and offer families resources to art, health screenings, sports, and other free takeaways.

As with every year, the Fish Parade and Summer Festival attempts to provide a positive summer kick off for families of the South Bronx, by bringing them together for full day of activities for all ages. The day starts off with the Fish Parade that marches from Hunts Point Riverside Park through the streets of Hunts Point to Barretto Point Park where the Summer Festival takes place.

In the spirit of looking into our past to celebrate our future, our Grand Marshal’s this year will be the students and teachers of PS 48 and the Hunts Point Slave Burial Ground Project, who have spent several years researching and gathering support in uncovering the history of the “Slave Burying Ground” that served as a cemetery for the slaves of the Hunts, Leggett and Willet families since the colonial era. This years festival places this campaign at the forefront of our celebration, and aims to garner support for the efforts of PS 48 students and faculty.

The American College of Cardiology Cardiosmart Program have secured a special visit from NY Yankee & Mets legend Dwight “Doc” Gooden, meeting and greeting fans at this year’s Summer Festival while they conduct free health screenings at their tent throughout the day. The festival will also feature activities including local organizations tabling their resources and offering free giveaways and activities in the park including The Laundromat Project, New Yorkers for Parks, The Knowledge House, Hunts Point Alliance for Children, Literary Freedom Project, Tuck-it-Away Self Storage, Free Arts NYC, Bronx Reign Dancers and more. Artists and food vendors will also be offering tasty and low-priced services all afternoon outside on the Viele Street sidewalk, this year featuring Vista Food Exchange, Bascom Catering, Father and Sons BBQ and DalĂ© Mas Catering and others. Nene Ali, Dancers Dreamzzzs, South Bronx Kings Baton Twirlers Team, Open Hydrant Theater Company and the PS 48 Hunt Point Marching Band make up the main stage acts of mostly youth talent playing music, performing poetry, shakespeare adaptations, and dancing, with DJ’s Jazzy Jay and Fabel Pabon playing music throughout the day. Raffles of all types of valuable items will also take place as it does every year including our annual bicycle giveaways courtesy of Recycle-a-Bicycle.

This year, we are also hoping to begin bringing families to take advantage of Hunts Point’s newest green space with waterfront access, Hunts Point Landing. As part of the South Bronx Greenway, Hunts Point Landing provides direct access to waterfront activities and on this day will be providing science-based workshops with CityScience, NYC Audubon and THE POINT’s own, Aficionado Arts. This day also serves as a kickoff to their Summer Event Series.

This year we will also be featuring the Bronx Council on the Arts’ Cultural Trolley that will be picking up passengers for free throughout the day to shuttle individuals to and from Hunts Point Landing, Barretto Point Park, Drake Park and the corner of Garrison and Hunt Point Avenues.
