Funding Secured To Keep Small Schools Athletic League Playing

City Councilman Andy King (pictured speaking above) held a rally this week in celebration of the inclusion of $825,000 in the Fiscal Year 2015 budget allowing the Small Schools Athletic League to

o   Continue to bring high school sports to 1700 student-athletes at 42 high schools

o   Continue into year 4 of our 6 year plan to make sure every student in New York City has access to high school sports

o   Pilot the “A PLUS YOUTH Program” – tutoring, mentoring, academic case management, and life coaching

o   Run Flag Football, Table Tennis, and Badminton tournaments throughout the year

o   Run Cross Country and track meets

o   Facilitate year round skill clinics for our female athletes

o   Run a year round Sunday baseball/softball academy

o   Serve as an intervention program for our most at risk students and English Language Learners

Since 2011, the SSAL has brought sports to thousands of high school students that are not able to participate in the NYC DOE’s Public School Athletic League (PSAL) and with the program slated to be de-funded, Councilman King championed the fight to keep the program in existence.

The Small Schools Athletic League’s statedmission is to improve student-athlete’s academic performance, behavioral outcomes, and attendance by facilitating interscholastic sports competitions tailored to the unique needs of small schools, bringing increased opportunities to the 64,000 New York City public high school students who lack access to interscholastic sports.
