The Public Advocate of New York, Letiticia James, has called for the city’s police officers with video camera like the one pictured to the left as a means of increasing accountability in the department.

“As technology advances and becomes more accessible, we must  investigate its use in improving government services, such as public safety. Given the disturbing circumstances surrounding Eric Garner’s death and countless complaints of police misconduct, I support outfitting NYPD officers with video cameras, beginning with a pilot program,” said the Public Advocate.

James has explained that the NYPD is already testing Google Glass to see if it can be utilized in police operations. The video camera pilot program, ca specific precinct would be chosen and its officers outfitted with cameras.

“This measure would provide more accountability as well as help save New York City money on settlements related to false arrests and police misconduct. By using technology in a smart way, we will help protect our city and the civil rights of all New Yorkers,” added James.
