American Cancer Society Kicks Off Pink Season At the Marina Del Rey Wednesday

The Marina Del Rey was painted pink on Wednesday, as supporters of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer joined forces to officially kick off “Pink Season” in the Bronx at their annual breakfast.  (It’s just an expression….this journalist’s high school employer did not actually utilize gallons of pink paint this week on their walls, to be clear.  If that wasn’t clear already.)

breastcancerOver 600 members of the community, business leaders, survivors and past event participants joined together to hear inspirational stories from one another and pledged an ongoing commitment to the fight against breast cancer.

The event kicked off the fundraising season for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Orchard Beach, which last year united 11,000 walkers and raised over $560,000 to be used in local communities for programs like “Look Good Feel Better”, a program that teaches newly diagnosed patients how to deal with the effects of chemo such as skin discoloration and hair loss.

The “Free Wig Programs”, a program provides women experiencing hair loss a free wig fitting and wig, was another program that benefitted from the event, as well as “Reach to Recovery”, which connects survivors that have been through treatment with newly diagnosed breast cancer patients to serve as a support system.

“It was so amazing to see hundreds of people showing their commitment to the fight and coming out in support of their communities. Over 15,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in New York City and silence will not end the fight.” said Lizzette Dorado, Interim Senior Manager for the NYC Metro area.

The 2014 Flagship Sponsors were Montefiore Medical Center, St. Barnabas Hospital, Bronx Lebanon, Jacobi Medical Center, North Central Bronx Hospital, HHC, and United Federation of Teachers.  Most fundswere raised by teams that signed up online and raised money through social networking.
