Lehman Center for the Performing Arts proudly announces the lineup for its 2014-15 Season, which continues its 34-year tradition of bringing world-class entertainment to the Bronx. The season will include a concert of intense passion with romantic favorites interpreted by the “National Voice of Puerto Rico,” DANNY RIVERA, as he presents OBSESIÓN, his beautiful new album that features timeless Boleros from the great Latin American songbook with Musical Director and Tresero, NELSON GONZÁLEZ, and the return of JOSE ALBERTO “EL CANARIO” to La Casa de la Salsa as he reunites with the original stars of LA TÍPICA’73, CAMILO AZUQUITA, TITO ALLEN, SONY BRAVO, JOHNNY RODRIGUEZ and ALFREDO DE LA FÉ. Audiences will celebrate the Holiday Season Jíbaro Style with PARRANDA NAVIDEÑA featuring FELITO FELIX Y EL TRIO LOS ANTARES, ODILIO GONZALEZ and LILY Y SU GRAN TRIO and be entranced by other world class performances including the ORQUESTA SINFÓNICA DEL ESTADO DE MÉXICO conducted by Maestro ENRIQUE BÁTIZ and the special 60th Anniversary Concert of LA SONORA PONCEÑA featuring pianist PAPO LUCCA and special guests YOLANDA RIVERA, LUIGI TEXIDOR and HECTOR PICHI PÉREZ with MC PACO NAVARRO. The popular Lehman Center favorites FOREVER FREESTYLE 9 and ROCK AND ROLL IS HERE TO STAY – The Best of Doo Wop return along with a newly added concert OLD-SCHOOL HIP HOP, a celebration of the musical genre that was born in the neighborhoods of the South Bronx. For more than three decades Lehman Center for the Performing Arts has presented an international selection of artists and celebrities at very affordable ticket prices. Eva Bornstein, who is beginning her tenth season as Executive Director of Lehman Center, says, “As I look back and recall great performances from legends like Smokey Robinson, Patti LaBelle, Johnny Mathis and José Feliciano, there have been many ‘firsts’ and unique moments here, like last season’s performance of Michael Bolton. Lehman Center was also the only place in the entire country where Gilberto Santa Rosa and Rubén Blades performed together on the same stage for the very first time. Lehman Center’s 2014 season offers a full and varied line-up of performances that stay true to bringing the best headliners, dance, music and cultural attractions to the Bronx. From the legendary Danny Rivera to the unprecedented reunion of Jose Alberto “El Canario” with La Típica’73, to the extraordinary Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México, to the classic Rock and Roll is Here to Stay Concert, our new season has something for everyone.” 

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts is on the campus of Lehman College/CUNY at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Bronx, NY 10468. Tickets for all events can be purchased by calling the Lehman Center box office at 718-960-8833 (Monday through Friday, 10am–5pm, and beginning at 12 noon on the day of the concert), or through online access at www.LehmanCenter.org. Lehman Center is accessible by #4 or D train to Bedford Park Blvd. and is off the Saw Mill River Parkway and the Major Deegan Expressway. Low cost on-site parking available for $5.

Special discounts are built into Lehman’s concert series. “Create your own Series” offers a 10% discount on a minimum of three shows, or a 20% discount for six or more shows, or buy five family shows and receive a 15% discount. Plus special $10 tickets for any seat are available for selected shows for children 12 and under. Danny Rivera, known as the “National Voice of Puerto Rico” has in his almost fifty-year career recorded over seventy albums, sold thousands of records and has performed hundreds of concerts including selling out Carnegie Hall in four different decades (1979, 1989, 1999 & 2010). With a repertoire that emphasizes the Bolero, Rivera has frequently been at the top of the charts with such hit songs as “Porque yo te amo,” “Fuiste mía un verano,” and “Para decir adios.” Many of his albums are now considered classics, including Alborada, Serenata, Danza Para Mi Pueblo, Amar o Morir and Amigos del Alma.

Nelson González was born in Puerto Rico, grew up in New York City and is widely regarded as the foremost master of the Tres Guitar, leading Cachao to dub him the “Ambassador of the Tres.” With a versatility that can range from Afro-Cuban to Salsa to Bolero, he has been featured on seven Grammy-award winning albums, been a member of the seminal bands Orquestra Harlow, Orquestra Revelación and Típica’73, and has toured with Cachao, La India, Marc Anthony, the Conga Kings, Rubén Blades, and Eddie Palmieri. Gonzalez has performed with Danny Rivera for over 25 years

Jose Alberto “El Canario” is nicknamed El Canario (The Canary) because of his exquisite voice and amazing ability to use his highly melodious whistling skills as a soloing instrument. He is one of the most successful and respected artists on the salsa music scene with a recording history spanning 37 years and 21 solo albums.

La Típica’73 was a popular New York Cuban charanga and salsa band in the 1970s and early 1980s known for their experimental style of combining conjunto percussive instruments (congos, timbales and bongos) with a horn section and for being the first US-based salsa orchestra to record in Cuba. Jose Alberto was the original vocalist for the orchestra. The term tipica refers to the “typical” configuration of a Cuban charanga with violin. Bongo-playing Johnny Rodriguez was the band’s leader and pianist Sony Bravo was the musical director. Famed Cuban violinist Alfredo De La Fé joined the band in 1977.

The Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México was founded in 1971 at the initiative of Maestro Enrique Bátiz and the State Government of Mexico, to promote music as a means of union and identification among Mexicans. A source of pride and joy to Mexican-Americans and Mexiquense, the Orquesta Sinfónica has toured North America, China and throughout Europe. Their concerts feature a wide range of traditional Mexican and Spanish songs as well as classics by Verdi and Beethoven.
