Important News From Public Advocate Tish James

News About the Worst Landlords, Sexual Abuse on Campus, Domestic Violence: News from Our Public Advocate Tish James:

THE 2014 LANDLORD WATCH LIST IS OUT!

For too long our city has allowed bad actors to continue to operate in housing. With hundreds to thousands of violations racking up against them, landlords of poorly run buildings face little to no punishment, allowing them to continue making money off of poorly run apartments.

For the men and women who call these buildings home, it often seems like there’s no relief. From leaking roofs to rat infestations, moldy ceilings, and more, tenants are left feeling helpless. I believe that has to change.

With increased access to data on their buildings and information on tenant rights, we are helping to empower the people of New York City. Check out the list and tenant resources now!

ENDING SEXUAL ASSAULT ON CAMPUS

This September, I sat down with student advocates from across the City to discuss an issue that has gained more and more attention across our state and nation- sexual assault on college campuses. The growing number of assaults is not just alarming, it’s unacceptable

As a woman, an aunt, and as your Public Advocate, I want to protect New Yorkers from these attacks and ensure that victims are heard, not ignored, shamed, and left to feel helpless.

I’ve decided to take action. Find out more about my plan in this week’s Wall Street Journal.

LET’S RAISE AWARENESS

October marks Domestic Violence Awareness month across the United States. Looking at the most recent statistics from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, it’s clear more needs to be done.

On average, nearly 20 people per minute are victims of physical violence by an intimate partner in the United States. That means more than 10 million women and men experience this within a year. This doesn’t have to be a statistic.

Together, we can raise awareness of this epidemic and work to stop it by supporting local organizations and passing legislation that not only protects victims, but ensures their abusers won’t be allowed to harm anyone again. Stand with me and others this month and every month to make sure change happens.
