Financial Focus: If you’re over 50, you’re considered “scammable.”

By contributor Anthony Rivieccio

What is a Senior?

When I was growing up, it was considered being in your 60’s!

One day, many retailers, including AARP, said it was 50!

And so do the con artists!

So, in today’s wonderfully sensitive society to Seniors, WAKE UP GUYS & GALS! We have to look out for ourselves. There are many scams today specifically targeting seniors:

Burglary

People impersonating utility workers, requesting access to your home to conduct a safety check of water, electricity or gas.

Insurance Fraud

People posing as a Medicare rep to get your personal information.

Evil spirits

People becoming convinced that “blessings” will protect people from evil spirits. The more money paid- the bigger the spirits.

Charity via Telephone

Do you know at that moment , if the representative on the phone representing that Charity ,is real or not?

These calls today take on different meanings, like money today being solicited for “natural disasters”, “Police foundation donations”, “Investment schemes”, to “real estate brokers” offering home owners very risky products, like reverse mortgages.

Check in the mail?

You believed you have won a lottery or sweepstakes, but you need to make a payment before you can unlock the prize.

If you have any concerned that you are being scammed- call your local Police Department. Invite them over and ask specifically for their “Community Affairs” unit , as they can inform you about specific scams in your area.

Also inquire about your local “Police Community Council. This is where the Police & the Community meet, monthly, to discuss neighborhood concerns.
