Congressman Crowley Celebrates Italian Heritage Month with Bronx-Queens Italian-American Community

On Tuesday, October 21, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, Bronx) celebrated Italian Heritage Month by hosting an event to pay tribute to the extraordinary contributions Italian-Americans have made not only in his district but across the country. During the annual reception, Crowley honored two community members for their outstanding service: Calvary Hospital President and CEO Frank A. Calamari and Institute for Music and Neurologic Function Executive Director and co-founder Dr. Concetta Tomaino.

“Each year during Italian Heritage Month we reflect on the great impact Italian-Americans have had on our country, and we pause to recognize a few leaders in our community who have made important contributions of their own,” said Rep. Crowley. “This year, I was especially proud to recognize two outstanding individuals who have accomplished great things in the fields of science and medicine.”

For 28 years, Calvary Hospital has been under the leadership of Mr. Calimari, who has dedicated his life to providing quality care and comfort to patients across New York City.

Dr. Tomaino, who is renowned for her groundbreaking work in the clinical applications of music and neurologic rehabilitation, has lectured on the emerging field of music therapy throughout the world.

“Their impact goes well beyond our city and we’re proud to call them our hometown heroes,” continued Crowley.

NYS Assemblymen Mark Gjonaj, Michael Benedetto and Michael DenDekker, and NYC Council Member James Vacca, also joined Crowley at the event which drew over 200 guests at F&J Pine Restaurant in the Bronx.

Each year, Americans celebrate Italian Heritage Month during the month of October to pay tribute to the history, culture and contributions of Italian-Americans.
