The NCBH Stork has Landed with Healthy New Bundle of Joy

The Stork has landed at North Central Bronx Hospital (NCBH)! Hospital officials welcomed the first baby born at NCBH since its August 2013 suspension of labor and delivery services. A healthy baby girl, named Nova Bryant, was born to parents Sierra Brownfield and Calvin Bryan at 2:08 p.m. on October 23, 2014. Nova weighed in at 6lbs 5oz, and measured 19.1 inches in length. NCBH celebrated this milestone by presenting the family with a complementary care package of assorted baby clothes and gifts.

On October 9 the ribbon was cut officially marking the completion of the brand new Labor and Delivery Postpartum Units at North Central Bronx Hospital (NCBH). HHC and NCBH are thrilled to announce that THE STORK HAS LANDED and the firs babies are now enjoying their temporary home with their moms and dads. The units include eight private labor and delivery suits, a 26 bed post-partum unit, upgrades in patient to staff communication systems, extensive and first-class comforts including fold-out sleeper chairs for family and flat screen televisions.

The $2 million dollar project was able to be completed to a great degree by Councilman Ritchie Torres who was able to secure a $600,000 allocation of New York City Council funds. His efforts were supported by Councilmen Andy King and Andy Cohen whose constituents utilize the resource of NCBH. The entire Bronx delegation supported this allocation. In his remarks Councilman Torres said: I am proud to have been able to work with the coalition of community groups and the Health and Hospital Corporation to restore maternity services to North Central Bronx Hospital”.

Dr. Ram Raju, HHC President and CEO said: “We have recruited the best talent of highly experienced and skilled providers. It’s like having many Derek Jeters on our team ready to deliver safe, quality care this community deserves.”

Mr. William Walsh, Sr. Vice President of the HHC North Bronx Healthcare Network said: “….Now we need the support of all of our community partners so we can be sure that the women of The Bronx are taking full advantage of all the services NCBH has available”.

Congressman Charles Rangel said: “I am very pleased to hear that NCBH maternity unit will be able to keep providing invaluable medical services to The Bronx Community.

Councilman King said “ The re-opening of NCBH’s Labor and Delivery Unit is major for our community….I want to thank Congressman Charles Rangel, Public Advocate Letitia James, my colleagues in the City Council Andrew Cohen and Ritchie Torres; the unions NYSNA, SEIU Doctor’s Council, 1199 SEIU and DC Local 420….”

Councilman Andy Cohen said: “this is a terrific institution that safely and effectively provides essential services to these patients”.

Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz said ; “ North Central Bronx Hospital plays a vital role in keeping our community healthy, and with this added service, it will be able to provide high-quality care during one of the most special moments of any parent’s life”.

Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj said: “My constituents as well as all Bronx residents deserve a first-rate full-service maternity service and I’m pleased that the efforts of so many have made this restoration possible”.

Personally I am proud to be a member of the joint Community Advisory Board of the NBHN and of Community Board 10 and being involved with two great hospitals North Central Bronx Hospital and Jacobi Medical Center.
