“Herman Badillo was a pioneer and an outstanding voice for Bronx residents and the entire Hispanic community. As the first Puerto Rican leader to be elected as Borough President and then to Congress, he paved the way for so many others that would later follow in his footsteps. Today, we lost a bright, spirited civil servant, one who dedicated his life to advocating tirelessly for his constituents and for all Bronxites. I am deeply saddened by his passing and send my condolences to his family, friends and supporters.”
