Success Academy Students Win Very First Dance Competition, Will Perform on TV in January

December 9, 2014 — Eighteen young Success Academy dancers, competing for the very first time, have won the annual Strut Ya Stuff Talent Contest for Kids and will be performing their routine on television next month.

The fourth- and fifth-grade scholars from Success Academy Bronx 2 performed a step routine to the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams during the competition, held at Manhattan’s Alvin Ailey studios on December 6, 2014.

Bronx 2 Dancer - 12.6.14The Strut Ya Stuff competition is held annually and draws young dancers of all levels from around the tri-state area. This year, 15 teams competed for first place and a chance to perform on Just Gimme the Mic, an arts and entertainment program on BronxNet public-access TV.

Members of the Success Academy Bronx 2 travel dance team practice three to four hours every week, and some of the students also take an elective dance class offered by the school. Though the squad has performed in shows in the past, this was the first time the dancers participated in a competition of any kind.

“This was the first competition for the squad — and a very big step for all the dancers involved. It was validation that pushing yourself, trusting in your team and a having strong commitment to a common goal can make dreams a reality,” said Success Academy dance teacher Cristy Robtoy.

The episode of Just Gimme the Mic featuring Success Academy dancers is expected to air on January 9, 2015.

SA Bronx 2, a free public charter school located at 450 St. Pauls Place in the Bronx, is one of 24 elementary schools operated by Success Academy Charter Schools. Admission is open to all New York City families. For more information, go to Successacademies.org.
