  • Department of Education Panel for Educational Policy – January 29

The Panel for Educational Policy will hold its January Meeting at the Taft Educational Campus.

 

  • Bronx Borough Board Budget Hearing February 5

This hearing will give an opportunity to Bronx and Citywide nonprofits, colleges, hospitals, schools, neighborhood organizations and any other parties to speak out on the Mayors’ proposed budget and the capital and service needs  of our neighborhoods

 

  • Applications for Local Community Boards Now OpenDeadline: February 6

Join your local Community Board! Make important decisions concerning City budget priorities, land use and delivery of city services, all of which ensures that your neighborhood receives the economic, social, and safety necessities to thrive. NEW: You only need to be 16 years old to apply!

 

The Kindergarten admission process has begun for children born in 2010! There is a Kindergarten Admissions Information Session at Theodore Roosevelt Educational Campus (500 East Fordham Road) from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, January 8th. The application period closes on February 13. Placement offers will be distributed in early April and pre-registration at schools starts in April. Families can apply online by visiting www.nyc.gov/schools/kindergarten, over-the-phone by calling (718) 935-2400 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday or in person at one of the Family Welcome Centers (http://goo.gl/qMLCTL).

 

EDUCATION & SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:

 

Learn more about the Design Field Trip program which includes an interactive exhibition tour and a hands-on design workshop based on your program theme selection.

 

Tribeca Film Fellows is a year round fellowship program for young filmmakers. The program includes development of a personal creative project, panel discussions, workshops, mentoring by Festival film directors, screenings, and special events.

 

  • 2015 “Change in Motion” Multimedia Contest – (http://goo.gl/iTcLQf) – Deadline: January 15

The American Immigration Council has announced a call for submissions to the 2015 “Change in Motion” Multimedia Contest, which challenges young people ages 14-25 to explore the role that immigration plays in their lives and communities through video and other multimedia projects. The prize for first place is $1,000, for second place $500, and for third place $250.

Girls who code’s Summer Immersion Program is expanding across the country and we want you to apply! Take a look at this recruitment flyer for further information!

 

NYC College Line is offering a creative writing contest for NYC high school students. To enter, youth must submit a short story (400-500 words) or poem (21-32 lines) responding to one of three prompts. The first prize winner will receive a Macbook Air, and the second and third prize winners will each receive a tablet.

 

Consider applying to be a Participant Group or Mentor for the 2015 Partnerships Academy Fellowship. This FREE program (February to August 2015) supports NYC community park group leaders to develop as leaders, achieve measurable goals, and network with one another.

 

Each year, the United Federation of Teachers proudly awards nearly $1 million in undergraduate and graduate scholarships to academically excellent and financially eligible students from New York City public schools. Learn more by clicking the link above.

 

  • REACH Nominations Deadline: February 1

REACH is a free 3-year educational and leadership program that prepares middle school boys to earn scholarships to Regis, as well as other top high schools in New York City. Students attend classes during a 6-week summer session and on 20 Saturdays during the school year.

 

Wishbone, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to high school students with limited financial resources to enable them to attend high-quality fee-based summer programs of their choosing, is currently accepting applications for Summer 2015.

 

  • SUNY Bronx Educational Opportunity Center’s College Preparation Class Open Recruitment – Classes Begin February 2

SUNY BEOC is currently recruiting for their upcoming College Preparation class. The tuition-free class includes: Pre-college level Reading, Writing & Math, college entrance exams, admissions & application process, financial aid application, guidance & advisement, choosing a major & the right colleges, visits to colleges, college fairs, & much more.   • American Museum of Natural History – Lang Science Program – Deadline: February 13, 2015

This program is for 5th grader who love science and who are able to commit to a 7-year program: 3 weeks every summer and 18 Saturdays per year. Students study the exhibits at the Museum and the work that the scientist  do, visiting their labs and collections and haring directly from the people doing research.

 

Inspired by the Education to Innovate Campaign, President Obama’s Initiative to promote a renewed focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education, the National STEM Video Game Challenge is a multi-year competition whose goal is to motivate interest in STEM learning among America’s youth by tapping into students’ natural passion for playing and making video games.   • Youth Communication’s Annual Awards for Youth in Foster Care – (http://goo.gl/b3Ozu8) – Deadline: March 6

Youth Communication is now accepting entries for its 17th Annual Awards for Youth in Foster Care. The goal of this essay contest is to promote a more positive image of NYC foster youth among agency staff, youth workers, and the general public. There are five prizes of $1,000 each and ten prizes of $500-$700 each.

 

  • National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, Inc. (NACME) Pre-Engineering Scholarship Program – (http://www.nacme.org/scholarships) – Deadline: March 15

NACME’s Pre-Engineering Scholarship Program recognizes the nation’s highest achieving African American, American Indian, and Latino high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership skills, and a commitment to science and engineering as a career goal. Each NACME Pre-Engineering Scholarship winner receives a $2,500 award to be used to support college tuition.

  • Citywide District 75 Council Special Education Forum: Part TwoJanuary 22

The Citywide Education Council for District 75 will host the second part of their series of conversations with leaders in the forefront of Special Education. You are cordially invited to join us during this forum to discuss and hear the future direction of Special Education.

 

The Community Parks Initiative is investing more City resources in parks in communities that need it most. NYC Parks will spend $130 million to rebuild 35 community parks, upgrade playgrounds, ball courts, green spaces and more, using 21st century designs and materials. To do this, they are looking for neighborhood input and feedback on the kind of park you need and want to see. Join them and let your voice be heard!
