Bronx Community Board No. 8 Announces: New York Yankees Youth Leadership Award Winners

Bronx Community Board No. 8 is pleased to announce the winners of the New York Yankees Community Council Youth Leadership Award. Dr. Roscoe C. Brown, Jr., member of the New York Yankees Community Council, will present the five (5) Youth Leaders their awards at the Community Board meeting on February 10, 2015 at The Riverdale YM/YWHA, 5625 Arlington Avenue, Multipurpose Room, 2nd floor at 7:00 PM.

The NY Yankees Youth Leadership Award is an annual event. It was created “…to acknowledge young people who are providing a positive service to their community, the New York Yankees work in conjunction with the 12 community boards of the Bronx on an annual basis to identify five area youth in each district that are making a difference. These children make up The New York Yankees Community Council Leadership Corp. The Award provides a $750 stipend for each Youth Leader selected (5 per Bronx Community Board). It is expected that the nominees will perform 50 hours of leadership/volunteer work as a tutor, mentor, community unity developer, and/or as an advocate against violence and substance abuse in the community. In addition, the five (5) Youth Leaders selected from each Community Board will be recognized for their achievements on-field during a pre-game ceremony on their respective Bronx Community Board’s Day at Yankee Stadium.

Bronx Community Board 8’s Youth Committee Chair Lamont Parker led the committees’ selection and the Community Board unanimously approved the five youth from the board area. This year’s honorees are:

1. Waleed Aberaddo has been nominated by Riverdale Neighborhood House and is currently a senior at Bronx High School of Science.
2. Christopher Ramirez has been nominated by Riverdale Community Center and is a senior at the Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy (MS/HS 141).
3. Raimundo Sanchez has been nominated by Riverdale Neighborhood House. Mr. Sanchez is a junior in the High School of Environmental Studies in New York City.
4. Brian West has been nominated by the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center-Teen Center. Mr. West is a senior at New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science on the local JFK Campus.
5. Muslima Adams has been nominated by a Marble Hill community member, Ruby Palma. Ms. Adams is a student in Bronx Community College.

Bronx Community Board No. 8 plays an important role in improving the quality of life for the communities it serves and in advocating with New York City government and elected officials for
municipal service delivery, land use and zoning issues, business development, the City budget and other matters relating to the community’s health, safety and welfare.
