Alarming investigation finds nearly a dozen sex offenders living in NYC shelters used to house families with children

Elected officials, community leaders and concerned residents call on the State Assembly to pass companion legislation to protect children

JAMAICA, NY – Independent Conference Leader State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), Senator Leroy Comrie (D-Queens) and Senator James Sanders (D-Queens), will hold a press conference TODAY at 1:00 PM at the LINCOLN ATLANTIC FAMILY SHELTER to unveil an alarming new report that found nearly a dozen sexual predators currently residing in 10 family shelters across New York City.

The in-depth report comes on the heels of shocking revelations that two sex offenders were being housed at the Crystal Family Residence off the Hutchinson River Parkway in the Bronx. Last week, the State Senate overwhelmingly (55-0) passed Senator Klein’s legislation (S.851-2015) that prohibits these dangerous offenders from being housed in family shelters and requires by law that they be placed in adult-only shelters or shelters without children. Since 2007, Senator Klein has found a total of 35 sex offenders living in 20 different NYC family shelters.
