The Bronx Celebrates Saint Patrick’s Day in Throggs Neck

Despite the chilly winds, thousands of spectators lined up for the 17th Annual Bronx St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

The celebration was hosted by The Throggs Neck St. Patrick’s Day Committee, chaired by James McQuade, and the Throggs Neck Benevolent Association. As in the past the parade was diverse, fun, and demonstrated that all Bronxites were welcomed to celebrate in Irish heritage.

IMG_8258Following the tradition of previous years, the Grand Marshals, Agnes and Patrick Lynch, were prominent community members within the Bronx. Agnes and Patrick Lynch married in 1959 and raised their family in Throggs Neck. Among their community and parish involvement are the Legion of Mary, the Holy Name Society, Eucharistic Ministers, Church Campaigns, and many more groups. Patrick has been the President of the St. Frances de Chantal Nocturnal Adoration Society for over 38 years. Agnes has been an ardent supporter of the Gaelic League of the Bronx and serves on the Blood Drive Committee of St. Frances de Chantal.

Monsignor Graham is the pastor of the St. Raymond Church and was named Vicar of the East Bronx in 2012. Monsignor Graham has dedicated his life to helping the people of the Bronx. Prior to the parade there was a Mass at St. Benedict’s Church, followed by a breakfast sponsored by Schuyler Hill Funeral Home

Elected officials who joined in the march included Public Advocate Tish James, Congressman Joe Crowley with his representative Tommy Messina, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., NYS Senator Jeff Klein, Assemblyman Mike Benedetto, NYC Councilman James Vacca, Democratic State Committeeman Joe McManus, a previous Grand Marshall.

Many Honorary Grand Marshal’s were remembered this year by family members and parade goers. Included was Bill Heaney of the Throggs Neck Volunteer Ambulance Corps, who was interviewed by The Bronx Chronicle Associate Editor Kathleen Canzoniero at last year’s parade.
