Two female college basketball players from the Bronx are currently competing at the NJCAA Division II National Championship in Overland Park, KS.
Karen Bellamy, formerly a student at Wings Academy; and Aaliyah Mercer, who attended Samuel Gompers High School, began their playing careers in high school. Both are now sophomores at Monroe College and are an integral part of its highly successful basketball program.
This is the twelfth consecutive year that the Monroe women have made a nationals appearance, after sweeping their Region and District titles. Yesterday, they won their first game of the national tournament by defeating South Suburban College 63-57.
