6th Grader Named Grand Marshal for Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital Walk

A boy who beat the odds was honored at Saint Raymond Elementary School last week.

IMG_8636After struggling for most of his young life, Gabriel Sanchez was honored as an inspiration in front of more than 650 of his fellow classmates and proud parents, Rafael and Angelique Sanchez, at Saint Raymond Elementary School.

Dr. Michael Gewitz from Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital appointed Gabriel as the grand marshal of their 11th annual Go the Distanct Walk and Family Fun day.

Gabriel has suffered from skin aliments and common illnesses, like colds and infections, since he was young. These complications resulted in long hospital stays, multiple surgeries, and many absences from school. During one of his stays in the emergency room in 2011, it was discovered that Gabriel had three abscesses on his liver. After this, a pediatric immunologist at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital finally was able to correctly diagnose him with chronic granulomatous disease.

IMG_8680Chronic granulomatous disease is a rare genetic disorder that makes it difficult for the immune system to properly fight off infections, including common infections. In 2012, doctors at the hospital were able to find a cure and Gabriel underwent a stem-cell transplant.

“He’s has been doing phenomenally well since then.” said Gabriel’s mother, Angelique Sanchez, about his current condition.

Along with his parents, principal Sister Patricia Brito, and classmates, the officating ceremony included a spectacular performance by Saint Raymond Elementary School marching band and an adorable Easter parade from the lower grades.

IMG_8670Also presented at the ceremony was Anjali Franklyn the winner of the Go the Distance and Family Fun Day T-shirt contest. “We are elated that our daughter won. We are so proud of her accomplished and it is for a good cause. She worked all weekend to get this done.” said Anjali’s parents, Hamattie and Prince Franklyn.

The Go the Distance and Family Fun Day is May 3rd at Westchester Medical Center. Families interested in the walk can register here. Saint Raymond Elementary School will hold their walkathon this Friday, April 17th 9 a.m. at the school.
