BARTOW-PELL MANSION KICKS OFF $1.7 MILLION RESTORATION PROJECT

Bronx, NY – This Saturday, April 18th, at 10:30 a.m., the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum will celebrate the start of a $1.7 million restoration project with Council Member James Vacca. The museum will also host 200 volunteers in a clean-up day sponsored by NYCares and Con Edison from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Council Member Vacca allocated $375,000 to the restoration project beginning in 2008 and helped to secure another $1 million from the Parks Department. The remaining funds were allotted by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz. Work will include: masonry repointing, cleaning of the mortar between stones, renovations to the roof lining and gutters, and restoration of two iron rod balconies. The project is expected to be completed in October of 2015.

“I fought hard to secure funding to ensure that the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum remains in good condition for the next generation of New Yorkers and tourists who walk the grounds of this historical estate,” said Vacca. “We must continue to support the preservation of this integral piece of Bronx and New York City history.”

“We are delighted that, at long last, the exterior restoration of the museum is finally taking place, thanks to the great support of Council Member Jimmy Vacca as well as the Borough President’s office,” said Ellen M. Bruzelius, Executive Director of Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum.

Built between 1836 and 1842, the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum officially opened as a museum in 1946. The Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum’s mansion, gardens and landscape exemplifies for visitors a type of country living that existed in the Pelham Bay Park area in the early 19th Century.
