#Not62: Montefiore Diabetes Workshops

Back in April 2013, the city Health Department reported the Bronx had the highest diabetes rate in New York City. Since then. the diabetes epidemic has remained unabated in the Bronx. Beginning this month, Montefiore Health Systems will host a series of Diabetes Management Workshops across the Bronx. The first workshop will be held April 28, 10AM in Co-op City at community center located at 177 Dreiser Loop.

In a report issued in March, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute ranked the nation’s counties on various measures of health, and the Bronx ranked 62nd out of all 62 counties in New York State.

The Health Department, Montefiore Health System, the Bronx Borough President’s office and other partners have joined together to highlight the various programs that have helped lead to these improvements, and they have created a new social media hashtag #Not62 to encourage community partners and residents to join the discussion and take action in creating a healthier Bronx.

“I am encouraged by the tremendous borough wide partnerships working together to address our borough’s health rankings,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

Health officials note that diabetes has the greatest impact on high-poverty communities, such as the South Bronx. The Fordham neighborhood reported the highest prevalence in the city with 14.6 percent of residents affected. The Northeast and South Bronx neighborhoods were the fourth and fifth highest.

The #Not62 campaign aims to engage major stakeholders across multiple sectors to address the determinants of health, improve the health outcomes of Bronx residents, and have the Bronx move up in the county health ranking in 3-5 years.

People with diabetes are also at risk of blindness, heart attack, stroke and a slew of additional health problems.

No registration is required for the free Diabetes Management Workshops. For dates, times and locations, call 1-800-MD-MONTE (1-800-636-6683).
