A collection of vintage military vehicles, military memorabilia, big band music, food served in a field kitchen-style tent and an exhibit on the impact of World War II will highlight “Operation Victory,” marking the 70th anniversary of the end of the war, Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31, at Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans’ Memorial, Katonah.

Hours on Saturday, May 30 are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday, May 31 hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This annual Lasdon armed forces remembrance, formerly a single-day event has been expanded to the entire weekend to accommodate new program enhancements. The event will mark the anniversary of the allied victory in World War II, including both VE Day and VJ Day.

An all-new exhibit premiering inside the park’s Westchester Veterans Museum will comprise photographs from victory celebrations and uniforms that would have been worn during these celebrations and other formal events. The “From Sleeping Giant to Superpower,” exhibit will explore the impact of the war on the United States, from the civil rights movement to the Interstate Highway System.

More than a dozen military vehicles, ranging from a World War II half-track to Jeeps to modern command trucks, will be on display. Military enthusiasts will wear period uniforms as well.

Painter Don Spaulding, a student of the wartime “Four Freedoms” artist Normal Rockwell, will display his work illustrating the American West and World War II.

On Saturday, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Gerard Carelli Orchestra will perform ‘40s swing music and the trio String of Pearls will sing Andrews Sisters favorites. On Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., the ABCs of Jazz will play the music of the period and other favorites.

Guests are encouraged to attend dressed in period clothing and dance to their hearts’ content.

The Duffle Bag, of Patterson, NY and other vendors will sell militaria and souvenirs.

Visitors can also enjoy delicious food and drink that will be sold in the authentic mess tent and field kitchen or visit the Officers’ Mess.

The Ninth District of the New York State Federated Garden Clubs will host a display in the main house illustrating the Blue Star Memorial, a national effort started in World War II by gardeners to honor those who served in the armed services.

Fee for the event is $20 per vehicle; admission is free for veterans.
