At this year’s Bronx River Festival “Hello Herring” we’re celebrating the new Fish Passage at the 182nd Street Dam, but did you know that West Farms is the oldest existing town on the Bronx River, going all the way back to the 1670s? That the very first “cow-boys” splashed across the river here (and they didn’t wear white hats either!) Or that the first silent-movie cowboy grew up here? 
Bronx River historian Stephen Paul DeVillo will share stories of West Farm’s lively past, while we see the new Fish Passage and find out why the alewife herring and the river eel are so important to the environment of the Bronx River. Plus – a side trip to view Xavier Figueroa’s sculpture Aqua Hung on West Farms Square.
This free tour will set out at 12 noon from the Bronx River Alliance information table at the Bronx River Festival, River Park at 180th Street and Boston Road. (#2 or #5 train to West Farms/East Tremont; walk north up Boston Road to the park; Bx 9, 21, 36, 40, 42, or Q44 bus to West Farms Square, walk north up Boston Road to the park.)
