Public Advocate Calls Emergency Faith Leaders Meeting

Following the tragedy in Charleston, South Carolina, Public Advocate Tisch James is inviting faith leaders from across New York City to join her in a discussion about safety in local houses of worship. According to an email, the New York City Police Department, Rev. Victor Hall, Rev. Dr. Floyd Flake, Rev. Patrick Young, and the Clergy United for Community Empowerment are also meeting participants.
In her email, James wrote that she and her partners in government “will create a plan of action to address this tragedy [the church shootings at Mother Emanuel AME Church].” The email did not indicate what kind of effect a NYC action plan will have on the tragedy that unfolded in South Carolina. James stated, however, that through collective action “we can make this city and our homes safer and prevent tragedies like this from affecting the lives of New Yorkers.”
The gatherings will take place Monday, June 22, 12:00-2:00 PM, at Calvary Baptist Church in Jamaica, Queens and Tuesday, June 23, 7:00-9:00 PM, at the Latino Pastoral Action Center in the Bronx. For additional information, please call (646) 942-1663.
