Vice Chair Crowley Announces Winners of 2015 Art Competition for 14th Congressional District

Bronx student takes top honors with artwork to be displayed in U.S. Capitol for a full year

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, announced the winners of the 2015 Congressional Art Competition for New York’s 14th Congressional District. Bronx resident Shayla Monserrate, a sophomore at the Collegiate Institute for Math & Science, landed in first place with her pencil drawing titled, “Nightmare”. Shayla’s artwork will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one full year along with other winners from around the country.

 

“This competition is always an exciting time for creative young minds across our district to showcase their talent alongside some of our nation’s most promising and emerging artists,” said Rep. Crowley, an ardent supporter of the arts. “Shayla is one of those artists who have demonstrated a natural ability to express themselves through the visual arts and I’m proud that she and so many of her peers have taken advantage of this opportunity. Congratulations to all of the winners!”

 

The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide high school art competition that provides an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize artistic talents of their young constituents. Over 650,000 high school students nationwide have participated in the competition since 1982.

 

2015 14th Congressional District Art Competition Winners:

 

First Place:

Shayla Monserrate, 10th grade, Collegiate Institute for Math & Science, Bronx

 

Second Place:

Maria Argyros, 11th grade, Preston High School, Bronx

 

Third Place (Tie):

Braxthan Saula, 11th grade, High School of Arts & Business, Queens

 

Third Place (Tie):

Xi Wang, 10th grade, High School of Arts & Business, Queens

 

Congressman Crowley is the nine-term representative from the 14th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx. He is a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and serves as Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus in the House of Representatives.
