    FAMILY ART PROJECT: FLOATING FLOWERSFamily Art Project Go Wild Garden

Collage and piece together a mixture of buoyant materials cut from recycled foam trays, colorful foam sheets and reeds to make a lotus flower look-alike or other fanciful floral creation of your own imagining. Keep it as a small sculpture—or see if it floats! Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon.

SAT, JULY 18    TAI CHI CHUAN
Quiet like a mountain, moving like a river, Tai Chi is a sequence of gentle movements based on images found in nature. In this beginner-level class, Irving Yee, a member of the William CC Chen Tai Chi School, introduces students to the internal martial arts and promotes an awareness of its benefits. Session fee: $25/$15 Wave Hill Member. Advance registration online receives a $2 discount. Online registration closes at 8AM on the day of the session. Cancellations must be made by 3PM the Friday before; after that, refunds will not be made. Drop-ins will be accommodated as the limited space permits. Participants must present their Membership card or a printed program registration form at the front gate.

Discover the fascinating history of Wave Hill’s architecture and landscape on a walk with a Wave Hill Garden Guide. Hear about those who once called Wave Hill home, among them Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt, Bashford Dean and Arturo Toscanini. Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon.

SAT, JULY 18    MEET-THE-BEES BEEKEEPING WORKSHOPNew Bees

Get up close and personal with the bees of Wave Hill! Observe bee behavior in the gardens, then suit up in a hat and veil to peek inside a hive filled with 50,000 honeybees. Search for worker bees, drones and brood (baby bees), and maybe even catch a glimpse of the elusive queen. Beekeeper Roger Repohl leads this fascinating foray. This workshop is appropriate for curious adults and kids ages 14 and older accompanied by an adult. $35/$25 Wave Hill Member. SAT, JULY 18    GALLERY TOUR
Join the Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions. In the main gallery, Seven Deadly Sins: Wrath–Force of Nature explores contemporary anxieties about the environment through painterly and sculptural depictions of natural disasters and their aftermath. The Sunroom Project Space hosts two site-specific installations that integrate the outdoors into the architecture of Glyndor House. Tamara Johnson extends the balustrade of the pergola into the Sun Porch, while Eto Otitigbe’s installation in the Sunroom gives sculptural form to his experience of Wave Hill’s grounds. Tours take place Tuesdays and Saturdays at 2PM. Free with admission to the grounds.

Reduce stress, increase your energy and bring strength and flexibility to mind, body and spirit with a yoga practice. Let the gardens of Wave Hill sweep you away to a world of colors and textures. Join artist Wennie Huang for this intensive workshop, where you will focus on color value and line density as you draw from direct observation. Learn how to adapt traditional yoga poses while sitting or standing with the support of a chair. Outdoor classes combine stretching, strengthening and breathing techniques designed to relieve stress, calm the mind and increase mobility. WED, JULY 22    STORIES IN THE GARDEN: CREEPY CRAWLIES AND WRIGGLY WORMS
Each week, Wave Hill educators share some of their favorite nature tales. These stories—classics and more—come to life through interactive readings, sing-alongs and puppetry. What can you find under a rock? Who wriggles and crawls through Wave Hill’s gardens? Listen to three stories that give you a bug’s eye view of the world, and then join us as we squiggle, flutter and dance like some of the garden’s tiniest inhabitants. This week’s selection: One Hundred Hungry Ants by Elinor J. Pinczes, Bugs for Lunch by Margaret Facklam and Under One Rock by Anthony D. Fredericks. Programs are held outdoors in good weather; in Wave Hill House in inclement weather.Ideal for children ages three to six with an adult. Free with admission to the grounds.

Join naturalist Gabriel Willow on a short, sunset stroll in the gardens and really get to know some of our resident flora and fauna. WED, JULY 22    OUTDOOR MUSIC:  ALAN HAMPTONAlan Hampton credit Todd Williams

As cool breezes blow off the Hudson and the sun sets over the Palisades, enjoy an outdoor concert on the Great Lawn. Each Sunset Wednesday, New York City musicians capture the vibrant colors of summer in performances that feature jazz, popular music, show tunes and original songs. With two CDs, The Moving Sidewalk and Origami for the Fire, to his credit, Alan Hampton has been called a musician with “loads of talent” by The New York Times. When not working on his own projects, he may be on tour, playing bass and singing with Andrew Bird, Meshell N’Degeocello, Sara Bareilles or Robert Glasper, or in the studio, laying down tracks for Sufjan Stevens, Derrick Hodge or Esperanza Spalding.  Tonight, he is on string instruments, with Jon Cowherd at the keyboard and Bill Campbell on drums. Visitors may bring a chair or sit on the lawn to enjoy the music. No blankets, please. Free with admission to the grounds.

A 28-acre public garden and cultural center overlooking the Hudson River  and Palisades, Wave Hill’s mission is to celebrate the artistry and legacy of its gardens and landscape, to preserve its magnificent views, and to explore human connections to the natural world through programs in horticulture, education and the arts.

 

HOURS  Open all year, Tuesday through Sunday and many major holidays: 9AM5:30PM. Closes 4:30PM, November 1–March 14.

ADMISSION  $8 adults, $4 students and seniors 65+, $2 children 6–18. Free Saturday and Tuesday mornings until noon. Free to Wave Hill Members and children under 6.

Limited onsite parking is available for $8 per vehicle. Free offsite parking is available nearby with continuous, complimentary shuttle service to and from the offsite lot and our front gate.
