The Bronx Celebrates National Night Out Against Crime

IMG_1490Bronxites and police gathered on August 4th in over a dozen locations across the Bronx to celebrate the 32nd annual National Night Out Against Crime.

More than a dozen police precincts and community organizations put together events throughout the borough, all with the same message: we care about our community and will not tolerate crime. “Events like this have helped to drive down crime. I am committed to making our neighborhood safe for everyone, including the elderly and our children.” said Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj.

Started in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch, National Night Out is meant to bring community and police together in a show of solidarity. A big theme of the night is to increase community awareness of police programs especially those dealing in anti-crime or community specific issues. The event’s held also give an opportunity for residents and NYPD to interact in a more positive, community based way.

The 49th precinct held their event at Pelham Parkway North on Wallace Avenue with a very festive environment. Along with handing out crime prevention information, there was music from Just Nuts Music Band and traditional Albanian folk dancing performed by children. A bouncy castle and a dunk tank for children added to the family-friendly vibe.

The 45th precinct had organized similar attractions at 140 Benchley Place in Co-op City that included a showing of Amazing Spider Man 2 and a special appearance by McGruff the Crime Dog. Along with plenty of hot dogs, children were able to enjoy playing in a bounce house.
