Klein honors first responders for service and dedication

State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) hosted his fifth annual First Responders Appreciation Barbeque on Saturday afternoon at Orchard Beach. The barbeque was held in honor of the brave men and women who have risked their lives to protect the safety and security of New Yorkers.

“The memory of the sacrifices made by our first responders on September 11 remains fresh in our minds. However, it’s every day that these brave men and women put their lives on the line to protect our neighborhoods and our loved ones. This picnic is one small way to say thank you for the work, the dedication and the courage they show day in and day out,” said Senator Klein.

The event included a barbeque lunch, live music by FDR Drive, children’s games, popcorn, cotton candy and much more.

The formal program began at 2:30 p.m. Senator Klein honored local heroes who demonstrate exemplary courage and bravery protecting the people of New York. The following first responders were recognized during the ceremony:

  • Ladder Company 46;

  • Engine Company 81;

  • Lieutenant Paul Trapani of the 45th Precinct;

  • Retired Detective Vic DiPierro of the 49th Precinct;

  • Officer Alejandro Ochoa of the 43rd Precinct;

  • Officer Satinderpal Singh of the 43rd Precinct;

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Francisco Pino-Duarte of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY);

  • EMT Deputy Chief Richard Chatterton of the FDNY;

  • EMT Deborah Greco of the FDNY;

  • EMT Edwin Mendez of the FDNY;

  • Lieutenant Jason Waszmer of the FDNY Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Station 15;

  • Officer Mark Rosenberg of the 50th Precinct; and

  • Officer Nadja Brightman of the 50th Precinct.

Edwin Mendez, EMT with the FDNY said: “Growing up in the Bronx it is a great privilege to be honored and I am proud to continue to serve the communities of this great borough. Senator Klein has always been a supporter of first responders and the FDNY. I appreciate him and look forward to serving the citizens in the Bronx for many more years to come.”

Vic DiPierro, recently retired detective of the 49th Precinct said: “That terrible day left a mark on our hearts that will never be forgotten. As a First Responder we did all we could to save as many lives as possible, no matter what the circumstance or how great the opponent. Thank you Senator Klein for this honor and thank you for your partnership over the years.”
