Public Advocate James Releases Worst Landlord List

On Tuesday,  New York City Public Advocate Tish James released her office’s annual Worst Landlords List. Saying that every tenant deserves to live in safety and security, James asserted that every apartment needs to meet basic standards of decency.

“That’s why, our Worst Landlords Watchlist identifies the landlords in our City who are neglecting and harassing tenants, and puts them on notice, James said. “We will not tolerate this type of behavior in New York City,” she added.

The list provides tenants with the resources, tools, and support needed to stand up to bad landlords and protect their rights. James said that this year’s list is stronger than ever because it combines data culled from the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, Department of Buildings, and Housing Courts to better identify the more egregious city landlords.

“We look at this worst landlords list as an equalizer. Landlords have their own list of tenants they do not want in their buildings, so we are keeping track of the worst of them,” added Ms. James.

While saying the llist is not a cure-all, the Public Advocate says she has seen improvements in buildings from previous years.

“We will continue to hold these landlords accountable until all New Yorkers have a safe and decent home, said Public Advocate James.
