CHAM Awarded Mattel Children’s Foundation Grant

Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Awarded Mattel Children’s Foundation Grant

Funds to Support Purchase of Tablets and In-Room Gaming Systems for Hem/Onc Patients

NEW YORK (December 1, 2015) – Young patients receiving care at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) will experience the healing power of play thanks to a grant awarded to the hospital by the Mattel Children’s Foundation in conjunction with the Children’s Hospital Association.

The grant, just one of nine awarded across the country, will provide $10,000 to the Phoebe H. Stein Child Life Program at CHAM, which helps children cope with fear, anxiety, confusion and isolation during hospitalization or treatment for illness, injury or disability.  Child Life will use the funds to purchase tablets and in-room gaming systems for CHAM’s hematology/oncology unit, where medically fragile patients confined to isolation will have access to them.

“Isolation can cause negative emotional effects in children, which can take a toll on their treatment and recovery,” said Meghan Kelly, Director of the Child Life Program at CHAM. “By providing these patients with fun, interactive activities and connectivity to friends and family, our child life team will be able to motivate these patients, improve their morale and, most importantly, enhance their overall healing process.”
“One of the difficulties children face during an extended hospital stay is maintaining the joy of childhood through the many procedures and treatments they undergo,” said Mark Wietecha, Children’s Hospital Association President and CEO. “The Mattel Children’s Foundation Play Grants will support children’s hospitals in their quest to create healing environments that allow children to engage in play and, frankly, just be kids.”

The Mattel Play Grants program builds on the success of a eleven-year partnership between the Children’s Hospital Association and the Mattel Children’s Foundation that has delivered over a half million toys to pediatric patients at children’s hospitals, helping create positive healing environments nationwide.
