Salamanca, Septimo Cash Haul Outpace Contenders In South Bronx Special Elex

Today was the first day to file fundraising totals for candidates wanting to run in the special election to replace former City Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo. As reported earlier in the week, Bronx Democratic Party favorite son, Rafael Salamanca raised the most cash. But to everyone’s surprise Amanda Septimo, an aide to Rep. Jose Serrano hauled in almost $28,000 in campaign donations ($4150 came from her own pocket). One observer said that some donors, particularly labor unions, make take her legitimacy as a candidacy more seriously.

The other candidates fundraising came up short. Although he had run before in that Council District, insurgent community activist Julio Pabon’s fundraising fell short of early expectations. He fell short of novice candidates Joann Otero ($8382) and Rev. James Loren Russell ($5943). Russell was the only candidate whose liabilities exceeded the donations raised.

Surprisingly, none of the candidates clear the two thresholds needed to trigger the 6:1 public match once they make the special election ballot. Tuesday, January 19 is the last day to file nominating petitions for the February 23rd Special Election. The next fundraising report is due next Friday, January 22. By then, voters will have a clearer sense of who qualified for the ballot and who will qualify for public matching dollars.
