On the eve of the 17th Council District special election, we received this photo of Bronx State Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz greeting firebrand GOP presidential candidate Texas Senator Ted Cruz. Twice. It appears that Rev. Diaz emailed the photo to Spanish language media and New York Daily News Albany bureau chief Ken Lovett.

In a tweet, our managing editor, observed that it seems an odd thing for Reverend Diaz to do just days before his favored City Council candidate, Rafael Salamanca, Jr. faces voters in a nonpartisan special election to fill the vacancy caused by former Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo’s sudden resignation last December. While polling data isn’t available regarding Bronx voter attitudes towards Texas Senator Ted Cruz, we doubt that he is favored by many Hispanics, blacks or anyone in this heavily Democratic borough.

The special election is on Tuesday, February 23 and Mr. Salamanca, who has support from the Working Families Party and the City Council’s Progressive Caucus, faces five other challengers.

No word yet from Sen. Rev. Diaz as to when and where he broke bread with his friend, Donald Trump’s main rival. Stay tuned as we try to get the rest of the story.
