(Bronx, NY) – On Monday, March 7th, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, was joined by Guest of Honor New York State Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul to celebrate Women’s History Month at his annual event held at the New York Botanical Garden’s Stone Mill. Now in its 13th year, Crowley’s celebration brings together women from across New York’s 14th Congressional District to recognize the progress that has been made with respect to women’s rights and honor women leaders from the local community for their extraordinary contributions.

“Celebrations like these are so important because they offer us an opportunity to showcase important role models for our daughters – such as the highest ranking woman in our state government,” said Rep. Crowley. “At every step of her life in public service, Lt. Governor Hochul has stood up for women and those in need. She continues to be an inspiration not just for women but for everyone and I’m honored to have had her join us as this year’s special guest.”

“Women’s History Month is a time when we honor the great women who came before us and resolve to carry their legacy forward,” said Lt. Governor Hochul, who delivered the event’s keynote address. “It is these trail blazers, many of them New Yorkers, which continue to inspire and influence women today to make great progress across the state and nation. There is still work to be done, but there is no better time than now for women to reach higher and make the world a better place for generations to come.”

This year’s honorees included Bronx Council on the Arts Managing Director, Deirdre Scott; Immigrant and Intercultural Affairs Director for the Queens Borough President’s Office, Susie Tanenbaum; and High School for Arts and Business Principal, Ana Zambrano-Burakov.

“New York City has a long and proud tradition of strong women leaders and each year I’m proud to highlight the women in our own community who are making the biggest difference,” Crowley continued. “Whether they are directing a charitable organization, taking a lead as advocates on important issues or ensuring our youth are on a path to success, their impact is felt by entire communities.”

Attendees were treated to musical tributes by students at Preston High School in Throggs Neck, as well the High School of Arts and Business in Corona. New York Botanical Garden Director JV Cossaboom opened the program.

Women’s History Month is celebrated nationwide during the month of March. A champion of women’s rights in both the U.S. and abroad, Crowley has hosted an annual celebration event every year since 2004.

Congressman Crowley is the nine-term representative from the 14th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx. He is a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and serves as Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus in the House of Representatives.
