THE STORY

Jon Trachtman and Leslie Arthur are out-of-work musicians who room together in New York City. To save money, Jon has been filing tax returns listing the pair as married. The day of reckoning comes when the Internal Revenue Service informs the “couple” that they are going to be investigated. Leslie masquerades as a housewife, aided by Jon’s fiancée, Kate. Complicating matters further, Leslie and Kate are having an affair behind Jon’s back, Jon’s mother drops in unexpectedly to meet her son’s fiancée, and Leslie’s ex-girlfriend shows up demanding to know why Leslie has changed and won’t see her anymore.

SEEKING

Leslie Arthur: Male, mid 20s to early 30s. A musician in the band with Jon. He is charming and intelligent (though rather nervous) and is quite popular with the ladies, who can’t resist trying to mother him. Performer must be comfortable in women’s clothes.

Jon Trachtman: Male, mid 20s to early 30s. A musician who appears to be a smart, savvy guy, a real leader. Although he is clearly the leader of the operation, he also tends to have tunnel vision.

Kate Dennis: Female, mid 20s to early 30s. Jon’s fiancée, even though she is having a passionate affair with his roommate, Leslie. Kate is a smart and aggressive young woman who expresses her opinions openly, but she still needs to feel wanted and desired.

Mr. Jansen: Male, late 40s to mid 50s. The cranky and sometimes bitter, nosy landlord in Jon and Leslie’s building. He is a “do as I say, not as I do” type of person who lacks any sort of manners and is not above raiding his tenants’ refrigerator. He must be able to throw a young woman over his shoulder and carry her on and off the stage.

Floyd Spinner: Male, mid 40s to mid 50s. The IRS agent investigating Jon and Leslie. He comes across as a straightlaced no-nonsense man at first glance. A great comic part that will require an actor who can play serious and stoic one moment and absolutely insane the next.

Vivian Trachtman: Female, mid 50s to early 60s. Jon’s extremely conservative and straightlaced mother. The actress will have to be able to play stoic at one moment but out of control the next, as she gets drunk.

Connie: Female, mid 20s to early 30s. Leslie’s gullible and not very bright girlfriend, bubbly and emotional and a fairly typical air-headed blonde. She talks fast and essentially without breathing. This actress will need to be high energy, comfortable with physical comedy.

Arnold Grunion: Male, mid 40s to early 60s. An intense, shady, shifty character whose origins are a mystery. He is a man in a trench coat found by Vivian on the subway and apparently a “fixer,” who can arrange for whatever is needed (including a sudden marriage), for a price.
