(Bronx, N.Y.)  – Today, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, proudly announced the appointment of Throggs Neck resident Clayton Kendrick-Holmes to the United States Naval Academy. Kendrick-Holmes, a senior at Xavier High School, was nominated by Crowley in January and will be a part of the academy’s class of 2020.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce that our district will be sending yet another bright, young individual to one the prestigious service academies this fall,” said Rep. Crowley. “Clayton has a proud family history of military service, and he will now get to continue that honorable tradition at the Naval Academy. Not only has Clayton pushed himself both physically and academically, but he’s also found time to help others after school and give back to his community.  It is this type of commitment that gives me great confidence that Clayton will continue to make his family and our nation proud.”

Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy and upon graduation, serve at least five years in the Navy or Marine Corps.

Earlier this month, Crowley had the pleasure of announcing the appointment of East Elmhurst’s Jaccob Louis Cortes to the highly selective United States Military Academy at West Point.

As a member of Congress, Crowley has the privilege of nominating a limited number of residents of New York’s 14th Congressional District to four of the five service academies each year. The honor of attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. Appointments to service academies are highly competitive, with emphasis placed on academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, leadership skills, physical aptitude, character and motivation. Crowley’s application period opens May 15th of each year for those candidates who are high school juniors and will be seniors the following school year, or who have already graduated.

Congressman Crowley is the nine-term representative from the 14th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx. He is a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and serves as Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus in the House of Representatives.
