Comp Stringer Visits Fordham Rd BID For Small Business Discussion

CITY COMPTROLLER SCOTT M. STRINGER VISITS FORDHAM ROAD BID TO DISCUSS THE RED TAPE THAT STIFLES SMALL BUSINESSES

Visit to the Fordham Road Business Improvement District in the Bronx comes after Comptroller’s Red Tape Commission releases 60 recommendations to help New York’s small businesses

(Fordham Road, NY) – On Friday, April 15, New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer was in the Bronx with the Fordham Road Business Improvement District, local community leaders and advocates to visit small businesses.

“Small business are the economic engines of our City and that’s especially true in The Bronx. This borough’s 16,429 small businesses employ 66,300 New Yorkers, but as my Red Tape Commission found, too often government has been a barrier to success, rather than a partner in growth,” New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer said. “Small business owners deserve better than this. In our final report, the Red Tape Commission released sixty recommendations that will help business owners break through the bureaucracy, hold agencies accountable, and cut the red tape that is holding them back.”

During his visit, Comptroller Stringer discussed many of the difficulties small businesses face including a painfully slow approval process and inadequate communication from City agencies. The Comptroller spoke with business owners about the recommendations from his Red Tape Commission report, such as creating clear timelines for agency approvals, improving services for New Yorkers with limited English proficiency, and making better use of technology to support small businesses.

The Comptroller’s Red Tape Commission is made up of 31 small business leaders, regulatory experts, and advocates. Over the last year, the Commission has held hearings in each of the five boroughs, and conducted an online survey of 300 business owners to better understand the challenges faced by New York City’s small businesses.

A final report, including 60 recommendations, was released by the Commission earlier this week. To read a press release on the report, click here. To view the full report, click here.
