On April 28, 2016 at HBO Headquarters, Montefiore Medical Center’s Lissette Marrero, MSW, Deputy Director of the Adolescent AIDS Program at Montefiore was honored with the Community Heroes Award from The New York City Anti-Violence Project (AVP), our nation’s leading organization serving New York’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities.

Ms. Marrero was chosen for her decades-long dedication to the crisis hotline and her exceptional HIV prevention work. This award reflects Lissette’s work as a multi-year volunteer and core hotline facilitator at AVP and as an advocate and ally for the LGBTQ and HIV-affected community.

Lissette’s relationship with AVP dates back to 1999 where she trained as a hotline volunteer taking phone calls from LGBTQ individuals in crisis due to incidences of sexual, hate, intimate partner and HIV-related violence. Today, Lissette trains aspiring hotline volunteers to take such calls and to gain a comprehensive understanding of to relate to violence and be empathetic and non-judgmental as part of their crisis intervention practice. As the Deputy Director at the Adolescent AIDS Program, Lissette manages finances, grant writing and programming, facilitates local and regional talks regarding youth and HIV and LGBTQ care and provides program advocacy and HIV counseling and testing.

“Working with the Anti-Violence Project and listening to what LGBTQ people go through has informed my work at Montefiore’s Adolescent AIDS Program. I am privileged to infuse my advocacy with an understanding of what some of the community faces both medically and psychosocially,” said Lissette Marrero, MSW.

Prior to joining the Adolescent AIDS Program Lissette was employed at the Sexuality Education and Information Council of the United States. After her experience working on the policy side, Lissette wanted to impact change on the front lines which lead her to positions at NYC Anti-Violence Project and Montefiore’s Adolescent AIDS Program.
