Vice Chair Crowley Announces Winner of 2016 Art Competition for 14th Congressional District

(Queens, N.Y.) – Today, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, announced the winner of the 2016 Congressional Art Competition for New York’s 14th Congressional District. Elmhurst resident Janice Lin, a senior at the High School for Arts and Business in Corona, landed in first place for her acrylic painting “No Memories Left Behind”. Lin’s artwork will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for an entire year along with other winning pieces from around the country.

“The Congressional Art Competition is a unique window into the talent and inspiration of young artists from across the nation, and each year I am amazed by what we discover,” said Rep. Crowley, a passionate supporter of the arts. “At her young age, Janice has already mastered the ability to express her artistic vision, and I am proud to have played a role in offering her this platform to share her work with so many Americans. I would like to thank all of the students who applied to this year’s competition!”

Lin, who will attend the University of Buffalo in the fall, said that her painting was inspired by her impending graduation. The painting depicts the silhouettes of students in traditional graduation dress against a starry sky, representing the shared memories the classmates will keep as they move on towards new friendships and experiences.

The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide high school art competition that provides an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize artistic talents of their young constituents. Over 650,000 high school students nationwide have participated in the competition since 1982.

Congressman Crowley is the nine-term representative from the 14th Congressional District of New York, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx. He is a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee and serves as Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus in the House of Representatives.
