Cabrera-Rivera II: Rumble in the Bronx

Looks like City Councilman Rev. Fernando Cabrera has picked up some last minute support in his rematch with incumbent State Senator Gustavo Rivera today. Democratic operative and former district leader Venancio “Benny” Catala posted on Facebook campaign-like artwork saying, “Elect Fernando Cabrera” and thanking him for his effort in naming a street for the Highbridge cimmunity activist Loretta Ruddock-Smith.

Reached for comment, Mr. Catala said that he has great respect for Councilman Cabrera and believes that Cabrera is motivated to help in all communities, African American and Latino. Catala is president of the Jerome A. Greene Democratic Club of which Ms. Ruddock-Smith was a longtime member.

Cabrera and Rivera are locked in an acrimonious election battle where negative campaign mailers have flooded voter mailboxes. Two independent expenditure committeeson opposite sides of the school reform issue have locked horns in the 33rd Senate District.

The Fund for Great Public Schools, a teachers union backed SuperPAC has weigh in support of Senator Rivera, while New Yorkers for Independent Action have sided with CM Cabrera because of his strong support for charter schools and education tax credits for individuals and corporations that donate to public, private and parochial schools.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in New York City, Long Island, Erie, Westchester, Orange, Rockland and Putnam.
