Telling Our Stories: Domestic Violence Awareness

Telling Our Stories: Domestic Violence Awareness
Giving a voice to survivors while celebrating their strength through dialog and resources

BRONX, NY– The Bronx Veteran Chamber of Commerce presents Telling Our Stories: Domestic Violence Awareness event on October 29th, 2016 at Holy Family School. Hosted by Kathleen Canzoniero, Telling Our Stories will give survivors of domestic violence and intimate partner violence an opportunity to share their stories through speaking and visual story telling. There will be resources and information on hand that are meant to help people whether they are currently experiencing or have experienced domestic violence.

Survivor stories are to be highlighted through word to give those sharing the option of remaining anonymous so that no one is left out of the conversation due to fear. La Nena of La Nena’s Boxing Therapy will demonstrate boxing techniques on Sergeant Gonzalo Duran (CEO of Devil Dog USA, Inc.) as a form of stress release and for self-defense to attendees. La Nena regularly offers boxing lessons to empower young girls and women. Information and access to resources for domestic violence victims is extremely important; attendees can take the opportunity to sit down with representatives from the NYPD, the New York State Chaplain Task Force (CWTF), NYC Mayor DeBlasio’s office, The Bronx Vet Center, Crime Victims Support Services, and many more.

Speakers to share their inspiring stories of survival and courage will include: Brett A. Scudder, President and Founder of Scudder Intervention Services Foundation, Inc. (SISFI), Flora Montes, Founder of Bronx Fashion Week, and domestic violence survivor, Mimoza Brahimaj.

Children can get their faces painted by Happy Faces NYC. Star of the Sea – Sea Cadet Corps will perform lively tunes, both classical and modern.
