50,000 Take Park in Annual NYC Marathon

Officials at the TCS New York City Marathon say more than 50,000 runners and walkers from around the world participated in the annual 26-mile marathon, held on Sunday, November 6.

Now touted as the largest marathon in the world, the course brings participants through all five boroughs of the city. Officials also say that more that one million spectators helped cheer on the runners.

This year’s winner was Ghirmay Ghebreslassie of Africa, who finished in 2:07:51, followed by Lucas Rotich of Kenya at 2:08:53 and Abdi Abdirahman of the United States, who finished at 2:11:23.

The top female finishers in the marathon were Mary Keitany of Kenya at 2:24:26, followed by Sally Kipyego, also of Kenya, at 2:28:01 and American Molly Huddle, who crossed the finish line at 2:28:01.

Other notable finishes included retired soccer star Raul Gonzalez Blanco who finished with a time of 3:26: 05, retired football player Tiki Barber at 4:28:26 and television sportscaster Sam Ryan who came in at 4:31:53.
