SCHOOL DISTRICT 11 ‘MATH ROCKS’ EVENT KICKS OFF WITH SHOWING OF HIDDEN FIGURES

CO-OP CITY — More than 900 girls from 40 Bronx schools in School District 11 were treated to a special viewing of the movie “Hidden Figures” in celebration of a “Math Rocks” event in the school’s district.

The girls were joined by New York City Council Member Andy King, Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina, District 11 Superintendent Meisha Ross-Porter and Dr. Jeremy Kabinoff, Ed.D, Principal Leadership Facilitator and Deputy Superintendent of District 11, at the Bay Plaza Movie Theater. All of the viewing rooms in the theater were filled to capacity.

Prior to the showing of the movie, Council Member King presented Ms. Ross-Porter with the first People Pay Attention to People Who Participate School Superintendent Award. And, each of the students recited the math pledge: “We Rock Math.”

“Hidden Figures” is the incredible untold story of three brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. The visionary mathematicians, Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
