Nearly two dozen rescue personnel spent more than six hours trying to save a beached whale discovered off the coast of Orchard Beach. The 15-foot baby minke whale was spotted in the water at just after 12 noon Sunday, April 23.
Members of the NYPD’s Harbor Unit and Emergency Service Unit were joined by marine biologists and specialists from several organizations including the Bronx Zoo, who eventually had to euthanize the mammal. The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society is expected to perform a necropsy to determine what caused injuries to the whales belly.
