This week, we honor those public servants we too often take for granted, if not regarding them with wariness. But we owe much their service, especially the peace and safety of our neighborhoods and roads. It’s National Police Week, signed into law in 1962 by President John Kennedy to acknowledge the service and its associated dangers.
The American Police Hall of Fame and Museum in Titusville, Florida, notes that over 9,000 police officers have died in the line of duty.
In 2015, there were nearly 1.2 million violent crimes committed, and more than 10 million property crimes. Confronting this lawbreaking are some 12,000 local police departments nationwide, staffed by around 214,000 police and sheriff’s patrol officers, detectives and supervisors.
