PREET BHARARA ENDORSES TIM SINI FOR SUFFOLK COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY

Former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, who Successfully Prosecuted Dozens of Political Corruption Cases, Makes Pivotal Endorsement

Bharara: “Those of us who stand for justice, integrity and the law, stand with Tim Sini for District Attorney.”

Tim Sini and his campaign Chairman, former U.S. Attorney David Kelley, today announced that Preet Bharara has endorsed Tim Sini in the race for Suffolk County District Attorney. Bharara, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, who successfully led some of the most high-profile prosecutions in U.S. history – including terrorism, narcotics, public corruption, organized crime and white-collar crime cases – declared that Sini is the right person to restore integrity and public trust to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office. This is Bharara’s first endorsement for someone seeking elected office to date.

“Those of us who stand for justice, integrity and the law, stand with Tim Sini for District Attorney,” said Bharara. “I hired Tim as an AUSA in the Southen District of New York in 2010 because I knew he was committed to public service and protecting the people we serve. Just as I hired Tim in 2010 – now it is time for Suffolk County residents to hire him as District Attorney.”

“Preet Bharara set the standard for excellence and integrity as our nation’s top federal prosecutor, and I am honored to receive his endorsement to become the next Suffolk County District Attorney,” said Sini. “Just as I did in the Police Department, I will bring to the District Attorney’s office the same values that were instilled in me as an AUSA under Preet’s leadership.”

“As a former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Tim served with distinction and honor, prosecuting hundreds of cases that put dangerous criminals behind bars,” continued Bharara. “As the Suffolk County Police Commissioner, he has worked tirelessly to restore professionalism and integrity to the leadership of the Police Department. As District Attorney, he will bring the culture of the Southern District of New York to the top law enforcement office in Suffolk County.”

“Preet’s endorsement further highlights who Tim is and what he plans to do in the District Attorney’s office,” said Campaign Chairman David Kelley. “Our goal is to build a campaign structure that will set the ethical and legal standard for how a political campaign should be conducted. We thank Preet Bharara for his support and encourage all to stay tuned to the exciting things ahead on this campaign.”

As the chief prosecutor for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara oversaw more than 220 assistant U.S. Attorneys dealing with a wide range of cases, including those involving terrorism, narcotics, public corruption, organized crime, and white-collar crime. He has received praise for his handling of some of the most high-profile cases in U.S. history, such as the successful prosecutions of arms trafficker Viktor Bout, terrorist Faisal Shahzad, and hedge-fund manager Raj Rajaratnam. In February 2012, Time magazine featured Bharara on its cover, referring to him as the man who is “busting Wall St.” In 2011, he was awarded Columbia Law School’s Lawrence A. Wien Prize for Social Responsibility.

Tim Sini was appointed the 13th Commissioner of the Suffolk County Police Department in January 2016. In his first year as Commissioner, overall crime fell to the lowest crime levels in County history. Commissioner Sini has significantly reformed the Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau, making it more responsive to community concerns. Sini has also made homeland security a top priority, launching a number of initiatives, including the popular SCPD Shield Program, a private public partnership to decrease the County’s vulnerability to terrorism, active shooter scenarios and street crime. Sini started his career in law enforcement as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York where he served under U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. Commissioner Sini specialized in investigating and prosecuting violent crimes, including homicides, gang related activity and large-scale narcotics cases.

Tim’s campaign is being run by Campaign Chairman David Kelley, who previously served with distinction as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2003 to 2005. Prior to ascending to the role of United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Mr. Kelley served as the Chief of the Organized Crime and Terrorism unit where he prosecuted the October 2000 attack on the USS Cole in Yemen; the 1998 bombing of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania; and Ramzi Yousef, the planner of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. In addition, Mr. Kelley helped lead the federal investigation into the 9/11 attacks on behalf of the United States Department of Justice.
